Let's Go Sox

Let's get it together, Bosox. The Mets are playing amazin' Mets baseball, and it's not good for us. Sure, we share a hatred of the Yankees, but it's not enough to make us friends; 1986 was a humiliating year. I know you were only wee toddler at the time, Jacoby, but you'll have to trust me on this, it sucked. Especially if you had a smack-tawwlking, married-in uncle who grew up awwn Lawwwwng Ayegland. Ugh. That was awwwwful.

My All-Time Favorite Late Night Conan O'Brien Clip Featuring Andy Richter and Matt Lauer: Katie Around?

I read today that Jimmy Fallon is taking over for Conan. This could be extremely old news, I realize, but I reacted all the same with a "Yuck," as I would. Having suffered through his horrendous "Boston" accent in Fever Pitch and all the other crap, I do believe I'm justified.

I invite you to enjoy my very favorite Late Night with Conan O'Brien Clip Featuring Andy Richter and Matt Lauer as we celebrate not Fallon's replacement of Late Night with Conan O'Brien, but Conan's replacement of Leno. Ding, dong, the witch is dead, yo. Here's to Conan reviving the Tonight Show slot! Viva, Conan.

1912 World Series, Boston Red Sox v New York Giants

October, 1912. Washington, D.C.
"Baseball, Professional. Electric scoreboard."
A close-up of the scoreboard from the previous post showing results of the 1912 World Series between New York and Boston to crowds on a Washington street. Harris & Ewing Collection glass negative.
The first game of the 2008 World Series was on last night between the Phillies and the Devil Rays (that's right, I said Devil, I ain't scared), and I assumed my love of baseball would override the fact that my team wasn't playing and that I'd be interested in the matchup.

I was wrong.

And totally psyched and relieved that I could go to sleep at a decent hour for the first time in weeks.

Go, me!

Red Sox Pull it Together in the 9th Inning

Clyde Engle, First Baseman
Boston Red Sox ~ American League~ 1911
Unbelievable. Simply terrific. I'm assuming Fenway's back of the house had time during Coco's endless at bat (which resulted in tying the game) to remove the champagne from Tampa Bay's locker room. Sox 8, Rays 7. Game 6 in Tampa tomorrow.

NLCS Game 4: The Boston Massacre

Tampa Bay leads the Red Sox 10- 1 in the top of the 6th, and the bases are crammed. Juiced. Stacked. Up your ass. It is ridiculous.

In a related story, I just discovered that Doodle scooted herself across the bathroom floor to evidently dislodge a turd from her butt hole. The turd skid and turd itself were big clues as to what went down in there.

Wish I could say for sure about what's going down in Fenway, and me thinks it's the pitching. Everyone always blames pitching when teams go sour-it's the go-to answer--but in this case, it's absolutely true.

Please. The Sox might as well be lobbing turds at Tampa Bay. Doodle could do a better job. You should see her slider, man. Took me almost 5 minutes to clean it up. There was Ajax involved.

Yankee Stadium's Last Day: Say Goodbye To an $9.50 Coors Light

And hello to a $14.50 Coors Light. Here's to hoping I win the Lotto or score some corporate tickets for access to the New Yankee Stadium during the rest of my NYC days, otherwise, it's the Coney Island Cyclones for me. I snapped some nice pics of Yankee Stadium this year, so check back tomorrow for the official Farewell Yankee Stadium post.

In the meantime, GO BOSOX!

Dustin Pedroia: You Hated Him in High School

And now you hate him more than ever. Especially you, Bal'more O fans: 11th loss in a row? You so hate Pedroia. People hate Dustin Pedroia more than

Anna Wintour is obsessed with Federer*.

GO BOSOX!

You Need Mucho Bread for a Little Beer at Baseball

Yanks v. Boston, Saturday July 5, 2008
Yankee Stadium. Sox lost. The difference in chants makes me laugh. In Boston, they chant YankeesSuck! YankeeSuck! YankeesSuck! (even if they played and beat another team) and in New York they chant, BostonSucks! BostonSucks! BostonSucks!
Team allegiance is all so tribal and weird and interesting.

The Mets Lost But I Won

The New York Mets lost to the Washington Nationals last night at Shea, 5-3. Here is some hard-hitting sports reporting by yours truly to help you feel like you were there for the boys of summer action:

Unbelievably not crappy $23 dollar seats at Shea with the emerging Citi Field in the horizon.

We didn't give the cotton candy man much business.

Beer man? Lots of business. Nice Shea Stadium RIP aluminum bottle for Bud Light.

This chick to my left (yes, she was a chick) smelled like an ashtray. Not a new ashtray filled to the brim with 65 cigarette butts, but more like an older ashtray, one the size and smell of a car or hotel room --with no windows -- that was smoked in for 65 years. Or a sofa. A smoky old plaid sofa in a someone's--perhaps a distant relative's-- living room with wood paneling I must have had the misfortune of visiting somewhere, sometime in my youth. Everytime Smoky Old Plaid Sofa moved in her seat, a whiff of stale smoke came off of her in a thick cloud, something like Pigpen.

Here's Smoky Old Plaid Sofa's Girlfriend with the denim hoodie. They were sitting on the end, super into the game and so ornery when anyone wanted to get out of the row that we resorted to climbing either down or up over the seats. I had a skirt, boots, and a buzz on, and yet, climbing over the seats was just easier all around.

Here's the reaction of the dude behind me as Aaron Heilman gave up the Vargas lead in the 7th. Multiply this reaction times all of Shea and that's what it sounded like. This dude told me that he loves to yell at the top of his lungs when he's at the games because when he's watching at home his wife doesn't care for it too much. Needless to say, not long after this, the Mets lost. But I won. How is that? Well, I had a dollar bet with this very dude that Carlos Beltran had his enormous chocolate chip-sized mole removed sometime in 2007. His buddy was able to prove me right by a call home to his own wife and a little thing called Tivo where she was able to rewind to Beltran's last at bat. Mole? Missing. Anne? Victorious.

Here's a shot of my friend Julia cheering my victory.

On our way to the subway and another shot of the Jackie Robinson Rotunda in the future home of the '09 Mets. Sure, the Mets lost, but as a Red Sox fan, I couldn't care less--just a fan of baseball. And if I don't get back to Shea before it's razed for a parking lot, at least I'll have fond memories---of my enjoyable evening and $1 win from a razed chocolate chip-sized mole.

Red Sox Opening Day at Fenway

And Bill Buckner throws out the first pitch!

Guess we just had to get a couple of championships under our belt before we could drag him out of his hole without shame.

Go Sox!

And in honor of Shea's Last Opening Day which is also today, Go, Mets. Shea Goodbye!

Rivals

Tonight, the first place Boston Red Sox will battle the last place New York Yankees at Fenway Park in what I hope to be an exciting game.
