30 Beers and 30 Onions Later...

A few weekends back when my folks were in town, we spent a hammered afternoon at McSorley's Old Ale House. If you've never been to this famed joint, get your ass in there before the inevitable Luxury Condo Wrecking Ball does. McSorley's has been on 7th Street since 1854, and let me tell you, it smells like it. But don't let that stop you; it's spewing with amazing beer and history: The walls are covered with ephemera, good word has it that those are The Great Houdini's handcuffs on the footrail, and reportedly my hero, Abe Lincoln, stopped in for lunch (not beer, as he wasn't much of a drinker) after his monumental 1860 address at Cooper Union across the street (a speech which some say made him President). Get the cheese plate with raw onions with liberal spicy mustard and Saltines. (Make sure everyone in your party eats the onions or you'll be sorry in their company later on.)

Peace, love, and history, folks.

Tab:
30 beers + cheese plate=$70

Man, that is one cheap tab. Just the 30 beers would cost you a couple of C notes at a yuppy joint.

Anne, this made me crave beer and cheese. Being in the sticks, I had to settle for a Rolling Rock and muenster....
