Doodle's Vermont Photography Project Presents: Farm Bell

"Farm Bell" ~ Photograph taken by Doodle the Cat
Greensboro, VT ~ August 3, 2008

This farm bell belonged to my grandmother's family and originally lived on a farm somewhere in or near Johnsonburg, Pennsylvania. Elk County's Johnsonburg lies atop a hill, infamous for its paper mills, once a staple of its economy and the reason for the town's peculiar smell and thick black dust which would blanket any laundry hanging out to dry.

I find this website hilarious, and Doodle thinks its condescending. The first thing I said when I woke up this morning was, "I can has cheezburger." And last night, "I can has cookie?" Ridiculous.

Have I Told You Lately How Much I Love Chelsea Handler?

Chelsea Handler is absolutely hilarious, and gorgeous to boot. Recently, I caught a bunch of back-to-back Chelsea Lately episodes on E! and I was howling, all alone. Per usual, the remote was buried somewhere underneath takeout food containers crawling with rats and I was too fat to find it, but I soon realized that was a blessing in disguise. The worst part of Chelsea Lately is the commercial breaks. Chelsea rocks.

Little Pumpkin Eating an Apple

'A friend is having me scan some of her family photos, and I fell in love with this Kodachrome slide; she gave me permission to post it to Shorpy. It's her sister and their great-grandfather on his farm in Sabattus, Maine, in 1964'

"We called him Bubba for some reason. He had a big farm in Maine and a roadside stand that sold just about every fruit and veggie you can think of. My cousins and I used to go pick strawberries and peas in the summer. He was always so patient and sweet, I don't remember a cross word from him ever. If you look close you can see how stained his hands are from farming his whole life (and smoking a pipe). It's funny what you remember about people but whenever I eat fresh peas or really good strawberries I think of him."

Dan Savage on Sarah Palin, The GOP, Abstinence "Education" and C*ck

If Abstinence Ed Can't Keep Sarah Palin's Daughter Off the Cock, What Hope Is There For Other Kids?
By Dan Savage
Tuesday, September 9, 2008 at 03:02pm

Savage Love column, for the Village Voice

The 17-year-old daughter of Sarah Palin, the GOP's vice-presidential nominee, is pregnant. The news was released by the McCain campaign during a busy news week—a major hurricane, the Republican National Convention, Dick Cheney getting us into a war with Russia—so it may not have received the coverage it deserved. So allow me to bring you up to date, gentle readers . . .

Seventeen-year-old Bristol Palin got her ass knocked up five or so months ago by 18-year-old Levi Johnston. Among the hobbies listed on Levi's since-yanked MySpace page—"fishing, shoot some shit, and just fuckin' chillin' "—was this revealing tidbit: "I don't want kids." But Bristol, says her mom, "made the decision on her own to keep the baby," and is now engaged to Levi "Shootin' Shit" Johnston.

As the adoptive parent of a child born to a pair of unwed teenagers, I'm certainly not in favor of abortion in all circumstances. But I believe that it's a choice teenagers should be able to make for themselves—with input from their families whenever possible—and, so it seems, does the GOP's VP nominee. Sarah Palin is pleased that her daughter "made the decision"—on her own—to keep the baby.

But Sarah Palin doesn't believe that other girls should be able to make their own decisions. Sarah Palin believes that abortion should be illegal in almost every instance—including rape and incest. So Bristol Palin is being celebrated for making a choice that Sarah Palin would like to take away from all other American women. Apparently, today's GOP believes that choice is a special right reserved for the wayward daughters of Republican-elected officials.

Oh, and Sarah Palin also believes that birth control shouldn't be made available to teenagers, she opposes medically accurate sex education, and she backs abstinence-until-marriage sex "education."

Sigh.

The GOP has poured hundreds of millions of dollars into abstinence "education" programs during the Bush years. I believe this enormous investment of public funds begs the obvious question: Are our children abstaining? Sarah Palin's isn't. Despite this massive outlay on the part of the American taxpayer and the example set by her Christian parents, Bristol Palin became sexually active while still in high school. Excuse me, but if abstinence education can't keep the daughter of the evangelical governor of Alaska off the cock, what hope is there for the daughters—and some of the sons—of average Americans?

I'm a cad for even writing this, of course, because shortly before Bristol and Levi were paraded before cheering throngs at the Republican National Convention, the Palins asked the media to respect their daughter's privacy.

Another special right: When it comes to respecting your family's privacy, Palin and the GOP see no need. They want to micro-manage the most intimate aspects of your private life. And if their own kids fail to live up to the standards that Palin and the GOP seek to impose on your family, well, that's a private matter between the Palins, their daughter, their God, and the thousands of screaming imbeciles in elephant hats waving McCain/Palin signs on the floor of the Republican National Convention.

Any Plans for 9/11?

Me? I'm gonna do what I did last year.

What's that, you ask? Well, as a New Yorker, obviously, I have plans. Those plans: Honoring the General Slocum Disaster. Duh. Fine. Sure, I don't have a Made-in-China ribbon magnet on the back of my car--or a car for that matter because I'm so broke I can't afford a bicycle--to commemorate it, but I was born an American, and I adhere by the American mantra that we Never Forget the General Slocum, and I won't, goddamn it. Look, I'd honor 9/11 on Columbus Day, but I'm plum booked up that weekend. I'm all about Italians thinking they discovered America, then flying to Vermont to see the Fall foliage. The colors are supposed to be wonderful this year factoring in all the rain and whatnot, so happy 9/11 if I don't see you. My love to you and yours. It's my hope you get extra chocolate whatevers in your 9/11 basket for being good boys and girls.

*If you don't have plans for 9/11 don't fret: in a 100 years, folks won't know what you're talking about, let alone care. In America we burn books! Not flags, yo! Reading is gay! Remember the General Slocum. Remember?

I'm Almost 100% Sure What I Ordered at Starbucks This Morning Isn't What I Drank

I'll be honest: the only reason I was there in the first place is because I found an old Starbucks gift card in the basket of shit on my desk. Please, do I look like someone who can afford Starbucks? Get the hell out of here, of course I don't. So I get in line, and I get nervous as I approach the register. I hear a bunch of broads in front of me asking for "grande" this and "grande" that and grande-ing their asses off. I order a combination of what the broads in front of me and the broads behind me are blabbing about: "I'll have an iced vanilla soy grande latte, please," I say. What I got was not iced, may have been vanilla, definitely wasn't soy. Whether or not it was a grande, I'll never know. The barista handed it to me, and I took it. End of story. See you until my gift card runs out, Starbucks!

It Was the Worst Blow Dryer Ever, She Said

A conversation between two broads overheard by this broad.

Sometimes You Think You're Taking Your Last Train Ride

I just made the 6 train just as the doors closed. And I not only made the train, but managed to find an empty seat in an air-conditioned car on a hot day. A seat, I might add, unfortunately situated across from the two broads in the picture I've sketched for you above*. Both were wearing head-to-toe black and entirely covered, save for the eyeballs on the one on the left which were revealed because she wasn't wearing sunglasses like her buddy on the right. And each time the train stopped and more passengers got on, their eyeballs would bug out of their heads at the sight of this ominous pair with a double or triple take. Every once in awhile the two would lean into each others' ears and whisper something. The one on the left was also rifling through her purse quite a bit. Do you think I was scared? You bet your ass I was. So I stared. And I stared. And I continued to stare at them as I wondered to myself, Is this my last train ride? I think this is my last train ride. Holy crap! This is my last fucking train ride! I can't believe I'm going out like this. I guess it could be considered more heroic somehow and less embarrassing than dying on the back of an overloaded 4-wheelie, which is how I thought I was going to go ten years ago...When the train stops at 23rd, should I move to the next car? Should I? Or should I get off the train altogether? But then I'll be late for work. Isn't the next car going to be just as pervious? I'm probably okay just where I'm sitting, directly across from the purse bombs. Is this going to hurt? Good grief, I hope not. Nails in the face? That's gotta hurt. My head'll be blown straight to bits, right? That can't hurt. But that's gotta hurt, right? Better than being in the car next door, where I could watch my own arm get an arm blown off and die of shock, probably, right? Ah, well. . . When suddenly, I arrived at my stop with nary a tick tick tick or a kaboom. Guess I managed to live for another train ride. As I got off, I glanced back quickly at the hobgoblins: Hope you ladies enjoy the rest of the day--which does not happen to be Halloween--scaring the living crap out of everyone you meet. I'm going to work now.
