I Love an Old Train Station

New York City had the creme de la creme of train stations, Pennsylvania Station. Here it is, during construction in 1909:

New York's Penn Station was so grand, it made Grand Central look like a dump, if you can imagine that. But like a-holes, we bulldozed glorious Penn Station after 50 years to build a piece of crap with Madison Square Garden on top in it's stead. Baltimore's Penn Station (originally called Union Station, but renamed in the early '20's Penn Station to match other stations Pennsylvania), was built around the same time as NYC's original Penn Station, and it is a grand structure as well. Thankfully it's still standing. I'll be seeing it first thing in the morning, as I'm taking an early train from Penn to Penn.

Here are a few antique postcards. The first is of Baltimore's original Union Station, which looks incredibly quaint with it's clapboard construction, awnings and all. I'm guessing it burned down. I posted it because I love the message on the front which reads: "I suppose you have forgotten all about me." Sounds like a wise ass. Reminds me of me. Awww, me.

And the present Pennsylvania Station Baltimore, back when it was still called Union.
