- This is a fascinating article that all single, in a relationship, engaged, married, separated, divorced, re-married, and re-divorced people should read. Right now.
Let's Call the Whole Thing Off by Sandra Tsing Loh for the Atlantic.
Enjoy.

Interesting, though I take with a grain of salt advice on marriage from a disgruntled recent divorcee, struggling simultaneously with failure-guilt re: motherhood and father-hatred. She is perhaps rightly unconvinced of the value of marriage for her, but too often people (especially writers) feel their own experience warrants taking on the burden of advising the rest of us, so much the better if some specifically chosen "research" backs up the proposed new paradigm. Or maybe she isn't really suggesting new options at all - she does after all call it a "modest proposal" after the famous satire...anyway, thanks.
thanks, anon. i don't think she's giving advice. i think she's pointing out that the institution sets the majority of people up for disappointment and failure and the shame of divorce often wrecks people indefinitely.
