Shaving cream is beat. Try Soul Scents Sugar Scrub. It's made from cane sugar and essential/emollient oils. You rub it on as you would shaving cream, shave over the sugar and voila (or "whalla," as I read frequently--groan--), a clean beautiful shave. The sugar prevents irritation and the oil makes your skin soft, so...believe it. I got a sample pack of this stuff somewhere and as part of my Throw 9 Things Out a Day Project and decided it was time to use it up and throw it out. It works. You can also make your own in the kitchen with two parts sugar (unrefined works best, but white is ok) and one part olive oil.
Or, you can grow all your fur out as long as you can and use a little creme rinse on it for softness.
