Skotch Kooler: The Coolest

Last week I read this New York Times obtituary for Petra Cabot (nee Emma Mearns) who was born in Philly in 1907 and died at her home in Woodstock at the age of 99. She designed the once-ubiquitous Skotch Kooler in the early 1950's. What caught my eye was this photo, specifically the Kooler, because although the picture is in black and white, the red, tan, and black colors jump out simply from the design itself. We had one of these things in our basement. Turns out Ms. Cabot left no immediate survivors. (am I reading my obituary?) But she left the Kooler, a sought-after eBay collectible these days.

These coolers were the must-have item in the '50s for the picniking set. Very stylish (for the '50s).

Don't worry about your survivors. The way you pamper that cat, Doodle will probably still be around.
