Ice Skating in Central Park

I had a Charlie Brown day of ice skating yesterday in Central Park, and it was grand. I'd say I was almost as good as Snoopy, having not skated in about two years. And just when you thought Trump couldn't have his name on enough crap, he must have trumped old Wollman in the dough department, as now the former Wollman Rink is now the Trump Wollman Skating Rink. Sorry, TRUMP, rather. All caps. "TRUMP" is even scrawled along the bottom of the rental skates.

The weather was chilly and perfect for skating. If you can, I recommend going on a weekday, off hour, if possible. I went at 2:00, before all the kids' clinics begin (which really jam the place with nannies and hockey equipment). If you have a real ol' regular job and can't get out for lunch, you may need to get fired to fit it into your schedule, and that may make it somewhat difficult to afford the activity, but it was reasonable enough. Way cheaper than bowling, if you can believe that noise. Two people can skate for 29 bucks including the cost of renting figure or hockey skates (which I must point out, are as dull as Keanu Reeves, so if you can, bring your own pair), and to offset the $4 rental fee for a locker, bring your own padlock.

Tell Bush To Back Off Sesame Street

I suppose it should come as no surprise that a man who could have benefitted from a little more PBS in his youth is now trying to cut funds dedicated to public broadcasting. Again.

If you watched shows like Sesame Street or Electric Company as kids, have kids yourself, or would like to live in a world where the children of today don't grow up to be the idiots and presidents of tomorrow, please sign the petition to save Bert, Ernie, Grover, Big Bird, Elmo, you know, the whole freakin' gang.

Without Sesame Street I never would have learned to speak and spell so well, let alone how to say "open" and "close"* in Spanish for cryin' out loud. So what if I learned that Spanish ten years ago? Learnin' is learnin' is learnin'.

Say Buh Bye to Razor Burn

Shaving cream is beat. Try Soul Scents Sugar Scrub. It's made from cane sugar and essential/emollient oils. You rub it on as you would shaving cream, shave over the sugar and voila (or "whalla," as I read frequently--groan--), a clean beautiful shave. The sugar prevents irritation and the oil makes your skin soft, so...believe it. I got a sample pack of this stuff somewhere and as part of my Throw 9 Things Out a Day Project and decided it was time to use it up and throw it out. It works. You can also make your own in the kitchen with two parts sugar (unrefined works best, but white is ok) and one part olive oil.

Or, you can grow all your fur out as long as you can and use a little creme rinse on it for softness.

Who is Doctor Who?

Sometimes you simply need to hang out with kids your own age. Otherwise, how can you expect to explain crap like this? Watching this intro to Doctor Who now just gave me the chills, because I was in love with this show and more in love with Tom Baker. Inexplicable to the youth, clearly. You had to be there.

Can You Believe It?

First, I stumbled across this page. It freaked me out.

Then, I found this. And now, I must admit, I think I believe.

Speaking of Him, I'm reminded of a story. Back in my old neighborhood, there was this cute fluffy little yippy yappy dog, a white terrier-style breed with his matching pretty human "mother." I love all dogs, but this was the kind of dog that J.A.P.P.y or related blinged-out broads usually pay big bucks for simply to enhance their accessories. He was cute, but she had a puss on her face. She wasn't a particularly nice broad I soon realized. When smiled at her dog, and then at her, only the dog reciprocated.

At any rate, I got my revenge when we went our separate ways on the sidewalk. I watched the two of them walk away. The dog had the biggest butthole I had ever seen on a dog that size. I mean, the butthole -to-dog ratio was seriously out of whack. And to his "mother's" chagrin, no doubt, the tail didn't cover the "blemish" so to speak. He was a happy dog, and that tail spent it's entire time sticking either straight up or wagging back and forth, but never pointing south. How embarrassing for her. That's not the type of abnormality she could have predicted when she was at the breeder's and whatnot. Anyway, I would occasionally see the dog on the street and instantly recognize him and not by his face. I hope he's still happy.

Andy Christie is Good People

The Sunday New York Times Style Section always has a good short piece in there called "Modern Love." This week's was especially good. I mean, wicked wicked good. It contained a wide variety of real (and not always pretty) emotions and it really held my attention (I've got problems), and at the very end I said to myself, "Wow, this dude is a fantastic writer." Then when I saw his name, I realized I had met him before. Of course! I know a lot of talented people. My unpaid career is to follow their careers from the sidelines. And the man behind "She Handed Me a Cup From the Fountain of Youth" is none other than the Moth's Andy Christie. That's where I met Andy, anyway, at a Moth Storytelling Event we competed in one evening. And if you read his story in the Times, or here, you'll see how good he is at telling it. Way to go, Andy! Incidentally, Mr. Christie has a new show he curates called The Liar's Show, and the next installment is Monday, February 12, and I'm gonna check it out. You should too. Liar.

Scientists say that there are several reasons for amphibian deformities and the decline of the species. And you thought Kermit was the most interesting frog on the planet. Sure, he spoke English. But how many legs did he have? Exactly.

So Much Frightening Crap to Marvel At

The only Season Six American Idol episode I have seen so far was when they were auditioning contestants in Seattle. There was a broad (who brought her mother into the audition room with her)whom I believe was by far the scariest contestant aired on the show for a number of reasons (most of them obvious):

  1. Her #$@!%^* singing voice
  2. Her Dutch Boy hairdo
  3. Her makeup
  4. Her twin mother
  5. But most importantly: HER MAMMOTH FLOPPING FLAPJACKS which were only emphasized under that satin blouse.

They were frightening yet mesmerizing. I could not keep myself from chanting:

WEAR A BRA

WEAR A BRA

WEAR A BRA

WEAR A BRA

WEAR A BRA

What made her think she could go bra-less? A simple boulder holder (which would have done wonders for her posture and general appearance), and she would have escaped comment by me entirely. For reals. Believe it.

She just wanted to talk to her. Ok, she also wanted to scare her. And then talk. Honest. How can you talk properly without rubber tubing? Seriously.

Past, Present, Future: Difficult to Understand?

"Considering your past history, don't you think you're at risk for making the same mistakes?"

Past history?

It's either history or past.

Not PAST HISTORY.

Why? Because it's a given that history is in the past, jackass.

Is there any other kind of history? Present history? Future history? Perhaps a refresher course in Dickens' A Christmas Carol is in order?

Get your shit together, you overpaid dumbass newscasters, you're contributing to my insanity.

Why Not Do Something You've Never Done Before: NYC Police Museum

NYC Police Department, circa 1860
Why not check out the New York City Police Department? But not by getting arrested. This time, try the NYPD Museum. The last time I visited it way back in '95, the museum was located on 22nd or 21st Street, and as my luck would have it, it was closed on that day. Since then it's moved to much bigger digs downtown near the South Street Seaport and has broadened its collection and exhibits to include the guts of an old police station, squad cars through the years, handguns, shields, badges, etc .

Puppy Bowl III Trumps Super Bowl XLI

So the Colts beat the Bears and won the Super Bowl. Blah blah blahbity blah whatevs. Peyton Manning got his trophy--good for him--and now everyone can shut their pieholes. I thought Billy Joel's rendition of the National Anthem sucked and Prince's half time show rocked as well as a Half Time Show can rock. Confetti, confetti, speeches, parades. The bean dip may have been the best part of the game, thanks to Fargrave's recommendation. Now, bring on the baseball.

Now let's talk about the real action, Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl III. It was a running game complete with tackling, fumbling, and holding. Too much! Three hours of baby canines. Hilarious. You can watch clips of the game here. Doodle napped through the entire Super Bowl and the first two quarters of the Puppy Bowl, but she did come out to the living room to watch the Kitty Half Time Show which she spent sheow-ting at the t.v. not unlike Napoleon Dynamite's Uncle Rico, stuck in her football glory days of kittenhood in 2001.

Eleven Years Ago Today: Super Bowl XXX

I don't remember much about the football game played on that Super Bowl Sunday in 1996 because I never saw it. What I'll never forget is the challenge I faced trying get the score. I wasn't at a Super Bowl party in the living room of a friend's house. Nor was I at a sports bar on the Upper West Side. I was at Splash, a gay dance club in Chelsea. (insert club beat here: nnnnChh nnnChhh nnnnChhhh nnnnnChhhh)

Football wasn't really my bag back then, but drinking on a Sunday (or any day for that matter) was. A friend and I had gone out for brunch in Chelsea at noon, and by 7 p.m. I was talked into a trip to Splash, a trashy boy nightclub that kept the lights low enough to hide the grime but not the desperation. For the first time in my life, I had chipped in half for a Super Bowl pool, the kind with $100 boxes. And though I was tipsy stumbling in the door of Splash, I wasn't too tipsy to forget that I had plunked down 50 beans, and our numbers were very good (2 and 7, I believe).

"What's the score??!" I asked the bartender who was dressed in nothing but a thong, socks, and shoes.

"Of what?" he asked.

"Of what?! The Super Bowl!" I was incredulous.

"Oh," he replied. "I don't know," and spun around to the other side of the bar. (It's square shaped).

Although it's more acceptable for straight girls to hang out in gay bars these days, back then I was one of a few, if that many, and entrance was difficult sometimes. And, it was a lonely place to be. Talk about being invisible. Before I knew it, Tuna was lost in the sauce, and I was fending for myself. I descended into the even darker and skankier downstairs, which had the bathrooms (co-ed, I might add, with t.v. screens over each urinal showing porn), a small gift shop, another lounge, and most importantly, the payphones. This was before cell phones. Yes, I'm that old.
I asked each dude I passed on my way to the phones about the score. I got blank stares from them all. It was a living nightmare. Kind of like that nightmare you have when you're trying to scoop up pasta shells from out of your bathtub and someone's knocking on the door. The more pasta shells you scoop up, the more pasta shells appear.

You've never had that one?

Anyway, I managed to get the score of the first half of the game by calling my mother collect. i didn't care who was ahead or behind or tied, just if the numbers matched ours. No dice. I managed to get the second half score from my friend with whom I shared the box bet via getting her mother on the phone in Atlanta, if I recall correctly. And to my delight and surprise? Matcha-roo! I WAS A THOUSAND BEANS RICHER! And hands down, the most excited girl in Splash that night. Err, real girl. As in no cock n' balls. I was running around like I had won a million dollars, telling strangers about my fortune. More blank stares. And for good reason: there was a Hot Ass Contest going on on stage.

The catch was that I had played the numbers way back in October at the bar in which my boyfriend owned, but by Christmas, we had split up. Oh, the holidays. This made winning the pool in his bar a tad wee bit awkward. When I went in to collect the cash, and he asked me how I was going to spend it, I said, "I think I'm going to Jamaica. Want to come with me?"

"No, thanks," he replied.

I went anyway, alone, and I had a great time. Though I think that a bushel of grass is too much grass for a 5 day 6 night stay, and a 5 day 6 night stay is too much time to be alone stoned in Jamaica. Just an FYI.

I guess the moral of this story is, if you find yourself in a gay bar that's not showing the game on Super Bowl Sunday and you have money riding on it, take your cell phone with you.

PS Is it me or is the NFL making some great strides in their attempt to capture a gay audience with Stevie Nicks during the pre-show and Prince at the half-time show?

Yikes

This is a rough way to go. Pretty near a polar opposite of the "I'd like to die peacefully in my sleep," as far as I'm concerned. Elevators freak me out sometimes (this a terrible town for that phobia), but there's probably a study out there somewhere that says that elevator cars are safer than real cars, and I'm not in one of those very often. The point of this post? You're going to die.
Enjoy the Superbowl!

Sarah Silverman--Cookie Party

I caught the debut of Sarah Silverman's new show, The Sarah Silverman Program last night, and it was good. Weird, but good. At one point when the cop asks for her license, she gives him a Post-It doodle of a dink. When he complains, all WTF-like, she gives him her "real license" which is a Post-It doodle of a bum with poo. A girl after my own heart. Now, as Sarah likes to say, "Don't be a pube" and give her show a shot will ya. Sarah dropped into the Boston Comedy Club one time, caught the last of my crap set, and gave me props on stage. Flight Attendants Have it Rough

I feel the job of flight attendants--essentially Waitresses/Waiters in the Sky, who must service customers at 30,000 feet while trapped in a tube-- has got to be one of the most trying jobs on earth. I've got a few attendants (formerly "stewardesses") in my very own family, and they, unlike I, must have dispositions perfect for it or I'd hear more complaining from them. Regardless, our flight attendants deserve more respect. Their responsibility bites. People suck.

Here's an excerpt from Salon on bad passengers by Elliot Neal Hester on my favorite gross airline passenger, Gerard B. Finneran. Click here to read the rest of the article about more ridiculous passengers.

April 13, 1999 A few years ago on a United Airlines flight from Buenos Aires to New York, Gerard B. Finneran, an investment banker, went totally bonkers. Newspaper accounts said that after becoming intoxicated, Finneran demanded more alcohol from the flight attendants. When they refused, he began helping himself to the liquor supply. After being cut off a second time, he became visibly angry. He pushed one flight attendant (federal offense No. 1), verbally threatened another (federal offense No. 2), interfered with a third who was assisting a sick passenger (federal offense No. 3), then walked up to the first-class cabin, dropped his pants and defecated on a service cart in plain view of the passengers and crew. Then he stepped in his own feces and tracked it through the main cabin (federal offense Nos. 4, 5 and possibly 6).

Finneran was arrested upon landing in New York. He subsequently pleaded guilty to assault and was sentenced to two years probation. In addition, he was given 300 hours of community service and a $5,000 fine and was ordered to pay more than $50,000 in restitution to the airline and to reimburse fellow passengers for the price of their tickets. (Not surprisingly, Finneran's lawyer said his client was "ill" when he committed the now infamous in-flight atrocity.)

Don't Take It Personally, I Just Hate Persons

I met a new friend last night at a going away party. He seemed like a gay fella. Happy and a boy who likes boys. Then he invited me over to his house on Sunday to meet his brand new French bulldog puppy and then it was confirmed: the man has a French bulldog and he invited me over on Superbowl Sunday and mentioned nothing about football. Gay.

Anyway, we were talking about animals and how much we love them and he said that in his life he's had 7 dogs, 5 cats, 2 birds, several fish and one monkey.

"A monkey?" I asked, beaming with excitement. "Wow! How old is he? What happened to him?"

A frown came over his face. "It's sad. My boyfriend had AIDS, and secondary illness of tuberculosis which we didn't know about, and the monkey caught tuberculosis from him and died."

"The monkey died??!!!" I exclaimed.

I'm such an a-hole.
