Let's Move to Plymouth, Shall We?
Moving farther than an hour's drive from an ocean can make me nervous, but this city might be worth it. Wonder if my gay friends will join me. Ahem. Mall of America, fellas! Mall of America!

tterrace Then and Now: Awesome
"1955 and 2002 (OK, so it's not quite "now"). A gag shot my brother and I arranged with an empty beer can found nearby, and a reenactment shot by my sister 47 years later. The building is the shell of the c. 1894 Limerick Inn in Larkspur, California."

I Just Don't Feel Like Enough Men Repeatedly Kick Each Other Into Comas For Me
This Miladin Kovacevic is one scary dude. Awww, romance. Is anything more romantic than a violent testosterone territory fight over a girl? No. Well, maybe.
Placenta Jerky, Anyone?
When James Braly tells a story, people can't help but listen. All types of people, it seems, judging from the crowd at the SoHo Playhouse last night. James has tall wiry frame, a long and slightly wild shock of salt and pepper hair, a strong jaw which is balanced out by small smartypants spectacles--he's really rocking a look reminiscent of my college American History professor whom I clearly had (have?) a crush on. Braly's also got a great voice with which to tell a story, and he's hilarious. He moves about the stage with a ton of energy and authority, but then there's a this healthy dose of sensitivity and self effacement that make him incredibly likeable. And then, well, then there's this wife of his! Susan. Let's just say that Susan's got some unconventional quirks that one can't help but pay attention. Or forget, for that matter.
I remember James from a Moth StorySlam competition a few years ago where he performed his piece just after I performed mine. When he mentioned something about his sons' breast feeding via a philosophy called "self-weaning" (ie: basically the kid sucks boob until he tells his mother he'd prefer some chicken fingers, I believe), I thought to myself, "Man. I'm fucked. My story about getting a black Barbie for Christmas can't hold a candle to a story about titties. James has this sewn up." And so he did. In fact, James is the only two-time Moth GrandSlam Winner to date. No kidding. It's all in the details. And when James describes--with equal parts love and revulsion-- his amazing twenty-year relationship with Susan and shares with us how the placenta from their son Owen's birth--taken out of the freezer where it'd been stored for 3 years --turned from red to brown, I blurted out involuntarily "Blleeeecccchhhhh?!" with such alacrity that I cracked up Mr. Braly himself. Marriage is a lot of things, and Braly reveals that his is far from conventional. But frozen placentas aside, Life in a Marital Institution is a true love story. A real true love story.

California is Perpetually on Fire
"Fire destroys the old gymnasium at the College of Marin in Kentfield, California. Arson suspected. The building had already been condemned for public assembly and was scheduled for demolition. In a way, the beginning of the end of the mission revival architecture of this institution, of which nothing remains on the present campus. Also: 1960 Thunderbird; vintage Van Pelt fire engine, but I can't identify the original truck make. Plus a really vintage, even for 1963, pedestrian signal at the extreme left."

You Need Mucho Bread for a Little Beer at Baseball
Yankee Stadium. Sox lost. The difference in chants makes me laugh. In Boston, they chant YankeesSuck! YankeeSuck! YankeesSuck! (even if they played and beat another team) and in New York they chant, BostonSucks! BostonSucks! BostonSucks!
Team allegiance is all so tribal and weird and interesting.

James Braly's Life in a Marital Institution: 20 Years of Monogamy in One Terrifying Hour
Is where I'll be tonight. I think I saw James perform some of this material at the Moth last year. The reviews are great thus far:
“Full of laughs and insight.”
A New York Times Highly Recommended Show
“James Braly’s wry hour-long monologue interweaves the story of his twenty-year marriage—a union rife with ‘tantric conflict’—and Braly presents it winningly.”
The New Yorker
“James Braly is never less than excellent … Laced with absurdity. Yes, you really should report the man, except you are laughing too hard.”
The New York Times
“A masterpiece of storytelling full of humour and pungent observation.”
The List (Edinburgh)
“An hysterically funny, often profoundly affecting one-man show. Mesmerising.”
The Scotsman
“Braly’s writing is accessible and breezy…he sounds as natural and effortless as Spalding Gray.”
The Journal News
“Excellent. This is a stylish monologue, reminiscent of those of Spalding Gray”
The London Times
And I'll be glad to add my two cents. Visit JamesBraly.com for more information.
Special thanks to Art Meets Commerce for my tickets!

Chris Martin is a Pecker
"There's nothing weird about calling your baby Chewbacca, if that's what you want to call your baby. It's no weirder than Sarah - it's just that people aren't so used to it.
"People make a big fuss over names - the names of babies, albums, bands, names of people. What everyone forgets is a name is just a noise and if you like it then f**k what everyone else says - that's what it's called." ~ Chris Martin
from monstersandcritics.com
Interesting philosophy coming from a man named Chris and not a man named Chewbacca, right? Or Apple, or Moses, or Sunday. Chris Martin, you are a pecker. That's what you are called.
Pecker Martin.
PS Coldplay blows, and your wife thinks she's so great.

Everyone May Be Beautiful in Their Own Way
But let me tell you something, there are a lot of ugly people out there when you look at them the regular old eyeball way. Holy shyte, are they on the streets today! All shapes and sizes of blicky blick blick. Blick! Bonk.
Mystery
This woman was in my apartment last night. I can't disclose the why because of an ongoing investigation, but she sat on my sofa, and no doubt took some cat hair with her. Intrigued? Of course you are. Now get a life.

Sometimes I Make Myself Laugh
Like earlier for instance, when I said that "poop + pee = poopy. Poop-y" That was a good one. And then there's this short post I wrote back in the day which just made me laugh out loud. So again, it's time for a repost. Please enjoy, Listen Up I'm Whispering.
Josh
The name Josh, short for Joshua, bugs me. Joshua bugs me too. I know it's biblical, but that doesn't make it not annoying. My friend Danielle says I hate it because Josh, when you say it, sounds like a wet diaper. She's right. jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjossssssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
One Man's Junk is My Dad's Treasure
from shorpy.com
The junkyard for my Dad is nothing short of paradise on a chrome platter. I spent three years one day in a huge scrap metal yard with him in Vermont last summer. Or was it the summer before? It was blazing hot. He climbed in, around, on top of and under no less than 30 cars (and what used to be cars) mining them for parts while I wandered around behind him taking pictures. He spent over an hour wrestling a window off of a convertible. Or was it the flashing around the window that he needed? I was fine the first few hours, but I wasn't prepared for the elements. I was dying of thirst. The sun was relentless, and in the shade where the trees, weeds, and vines grew up through the cars themselves, the mosquitoes were even more relentless. At one point I couldn't even find my Dad he was so lost in the car sauce, loving every single minute of it. The only reason we eventually left was because of my begging. And there may have been some whining. We paid for our scraps, and then we got some ice cream. When we got home, we jumped in the lake. It was a great day.

Acronyms Created By the Absolutely Humorless
One of my colleagues in the office just asked another for an
Account Service Notification Form.
But he used the official acronym which is
ASNF.
Pronounced "asniff."
That's right:
ASS SNIFF.
Did you get me the Ass Sniff for that?
We're gonna need an Ass Sniff.
I didn't see the Ass Sniff.
Where are the Ass Sniffs?!!
WHERE IS MY ASS SNIFF?
People are finding the humor I find in this humorous. Please. I'm crying I'm laughing so hard. This IS humorous. What's not humorous about people at work, asking you, out loud, in plain English, for an ass sniff? Good grief, it's fucking ridiculous how hilarious it is.
