I Can See Clearly Now, the Rain Has Gone

Irving Parkway, Olean, New York. Thanksgiving 11/06
This swingset has been here for forever. My grandmother's former house is the one on the left with the big porch. I spent many a summer afternoon on that front porch with Grama Altman when I was a kid, sipping iced tea with fresh mint from the garden and playing a rousing game of "Guess Which Color Car Will Drive Down the Street Next?" It was usually safe to guess blue or white. We saw about a car an hour on a good day. A lot of K cars. Man, Grama was the greatest.
You think that picture was ridiculous? How about these?

Some little dog in a swing, Irving Parkway, Olean, New York, 11/06

A dog in a swing? Almost as funny as a dog in a bandanna.

I spent much of my childhood in a small town in Texas that looked like that. I would sit with my great-aunt on her wide porch and listen to her make comments about all the neighbors that walked by. Her house was right outside the cemetery where many generations of my family lay.

I drove through there a few months ago and that house had burned down. No one was hurt but sad just the same.

Well, it was actually my great-aunts house. She died years ago and a cousin inherited the house. She is way batty and probably set the house on fire with a cigarette. She had stacks of newpapers piled everywhere which helped the blaze along nicely. It's really lucky she got out since she is almost 90 years old.

My grandma's house is just up the street and still in great shape, thanks to the local high school football coach who owns it now.
