Froggy Business

Kebekwa or the Quebec Jumping Frogs?

There's a fella up there in Quebec who is defending the right to name his American Basketball Association* team the Jumping Frogs despite some outcry that the term "frog" is used as a derogatory term to describe the French-speaking Quebec population. The other option is the "Kebekwa" (Quebecois). I'm not sure what the uproar's all about; the Italians didn't have a problem calling their team the Flying Wops, did they? Oh. They did? Whatevs. We're all a-holes no matter what the provenance. Let's bring back the racist stereotypes so everyone's clear on everything.

How this affects the rest of us: If the Canadians are pissed, I guess this means we've lost the last population of people on earth to insult safely. They never seemed to notice in the past.

Ah, well.

I love you, Canada! Your country is beautiful and your beer delicious. May the best team name win.

*The team name takes a back seat to the sweet red, white, and blue ball of the ABA, anyway.

Let's not forget France's Cheese Eating Surrender Monkeys.

Quebec has no business getting a basketball team anyway. We should just stick to hockey and poutine and be happy with our lot.

What about calling them the Celine Dion's?

A. I object to Kebekwa because it is too close to my state's catchy new slogan (really), "Say WA" (get it? Aren't you desperate to come to Washington now?)

B. People used to call us Oregonians (I've obviously since defected) webfoots because it rained all the time. So when the University of Oregon picked a mascot, they picked the Ducks. See? It's fun to make fun of yourself. Go, Ducks! Go, Froggies!
