So You Say You're From Western New York State

This is a typical Altman family photo. Our family is a regular family, just like yours. But is your family from Western New York? If so, you'll recognize the hidden signs crammed into this one shot.

If not, you're going to have to work a little harder. Think of it as a game on the back of your Froot Loops or a Denny's place mat. Put on your Western New York State Thinkin' Cap and get goin'! How many clues can you spot? Good luck!

1) The photo is out of focus. Therefore, I am going to guess that quite a bit of beer was present.

2) Two people are wearing matching sweatshirts that I can’t make out. Buffalo Sabers? Fredonia Blue Devils? The woman (background right) with the can of Coors is certainly sporting the Fredonia State sweatshirt. That is a good teaching school.

3) I am guessing that is (L to R) Anne, her dad, and mom in the center background. (I notice the caterpillar mustache is gone, so I would guess 1983) Judging from his attire, I am going to guess that dad went to St. Bonaventure University.

4) The biggest clue is that yellow rubber duckie, but what happens in Buffalo stays in Buffalo.

I grew up in Manhattan, but I watched a lot of Columbo as a kid.

Ha! Peter, very good work for a non-native and an out of focus picture. Congrats on getting two correct
1) Fredonia State
2) St. Bonaventure University

I'll keep mum on the other two in case someone else wants to take a stab...

good thing there's no such thing as "business casual" in western new york. or maybe sweatshirts are included in that category there.

The National Geographic magazine. For cultural discussions. And the rubber duck, found only in western New York, where it is domesticated to sit on coffee tables and stare at guests.
